OUR SERVICES

African Community Family Services

African Community Family Services works with individuals, families, and neighborhoods impacted by addiction and mental illness. We offer culturally specific chemical and mental health programs that affect family preservation and foster community-based change and well-being from a holistic perspective.

Our programs

Our programs are based on compassion and reverence and are geared toward promoting wellness. Despite the fact that the disorders we treat share many features and behavioral patterns, we understand that each client's experience is special and tailor care to meet their specific needs.

mental health

The majority of African Community Family Services' clients who have received mental health care experience relief from emotional distress as well as progress toward personal goals. Counselors and facilitators assist clients in identifying the cause of their unrest before providing stability and wellness through culturally sensitive and holistic mental health services. Depression, anxiety, family abuse, sorrow and loss, parenting skills, and a variety of other mental health needs are addressed through our programs. The services mentioned below provide specific programming and resources.

Trauma-Informed Treatment

We primarily serve African Americans who live in and/or have grown up in poverty, many of whom have been subjected to disproportionately high rates of trauma and violence, such as sexual harassment, domestic violence, child abuse/neglect, and gang violence. Expanding the potential for culturally specific, trauma-informed adult mental health services both within the organization and in the community at large is a major priority of the African Community Family Services' Trauma-Informed Treatment Initiative. We achieve this by instilling this creative and culturally sensitive model in doctoral and post-doctoral interns, as well as students and staff. We promote the development and expansion of trauma-informed mental health programs within other organizations that serve African and African American people in urban areas.

Individual & Family Counseling

Adults and adolescents will receive individual and family therapy from our certified mental health therapists by appointment or walk-in, depending on availability. African Community Family Services mental health therapists can also be located in community health centers in the Twin Cities, where they provide sliding-fee mental health therapy to those who qualify. African Community Family Services has contracts with the majority of Minnesota's insurance companies.

Family Services

Our Family Services program assists African and African American families with minor children who have been put out of the home or are at risk of being placed out of the home, with no significant findings of child endangerment and the intention of reunification. Children and Adult Services in the county accept referrals. Case management programs identify a family's strengths and needs, connect them to client-centered, culturally relevant wrap-around services, connect them to resources in their community where possible, help them build a supportive support system, and provide life skills instruction to help them establish a wellness-focused family culture. Parenting evaluation programs, as well as family violence prevention and reduction services, are other tools that complement our Family Services/Preservation programming.
